County Antrim Yacht Club Boathouse
- Awardee: County Antrim Yacht Club
- Location: Whitehead
- Council: Carrickfergus
- Grant: £71,961.30 (Awarded)
County Antrim Yacht Club celebrated the launch of their amazing, newly refurbished boathouse in May, with kayaker Elaine Alexander opening the facility. The boathouse was originally built around 1870 to house the local lifeboat and the Yacht Club received GROW funding of over £51,000 to bring it back to life and provide a storage facility for canoes and kayaks. The project aims to encourage tourists to rural Carrickfergus and build on the increasing popularity of canoeing and kayaking. Providing secure storage will encourage more water sport enthusiasts to stop off in Whitehead, stay in the area and increase the tourist potential of the village.
The boathouse was in poor condition and storing club equipment wasn't feasible as it was damp and the equipment risked being damaged. Kayaks have an average price of £3,000, so kayakers needed a storage area which was secure and fit for purpose. This has created a top class facility for visiting canoeists and kayakers, which will be fantastic for those using the new East Coast Canoe Trail.
