Diversification - Business Planning Course
Country Cake Designs
- Awardee: Lorraine Duncan
- Location: Crosskennan Road
- Council: Antrim
- Grant: £9,765 (Project 1) £4,689.76 (Project 2)
Lorraine Duncan started cake decoration as a hobby over 6 years ago and set up Country Cake Designs in 2005 offering personally designed, handcrafted cakes specific to customer needs.
The first grant enabled her to convert a disused barn into a cake decoration work area, as Lorraine had been previously working from her own kitchen. The business began with baking, designing and decorating cakes to order for anniversaries, weddings, birthdays and other celebrations. As a result of customer requests, Lorraine later began to offer group demonstrations and cake decorating classes on a small scale.
A second award of funding helped Lorraine to set up a teaching area in the new building, including the purchase of an Aga stove, which is a unique selling point for the cookery courses.
Lorraine’s project enabled her to diversify the family farm and create a full-time job for herself and casual employment during demonstration events.
“Cake decorating was always something I really enjoyed and so to be able to set it up as a business is fantastic. Being my own boss is just an added bonus to being able to work at something I love doing!”
