Cairn Farm Fly Fishery
- Awardee: Mervyn Weatherup
- Location: Cairn Road
- Council: Carrickfergus
- Grant: £14,400
Mervyn Weatherup was awarded funding to create a put and take fly-fishing lake and bait pond under the Farm Diversification programme. Mervyn expanded an existing lake on his own farming land to create the fly-fishing lake and small bait pond as a recreational facility and tourist attraction for the area.
Mervyn excavated and landscaped the area, laying down stones to provide a pathway to those using the lake. Funding was also used to purchase a portacabin to store equipment and to provide toilet facilities for anglers.
“I was confident that Cairn would be a great location for the lake, being central to Larne, Ballyclare and Carrickfergus, but developing it required a lot of construction work and we also needed to build car parking facilities and an on-site picnic area for customers. The financial support from the Rural Development Programme enabled us to capitalise on the diversification of the family farm, creating employment and contributing towards the sustainability of the farm. Our lake holds a wide variety of fish, including Arctic Char, which is unique to Northern Ireland. This has attracted visitors from across Europe, which is a real boost to the local rural economy.”
